Trust-Based Grooming Case Study:
Jigme's Story

Our
Approach

Get to Know Us

At Vanity Fur VIP, we specialise in calm, comfort-first grooming for dogs who need extra care particularly senior dogs, puppies, arthritic dogs, and dogs who struggle with traditional grooming environments.

These real-life case studies share the grooming journeys of dogs whose needs go beyond a standard groom. From difficulty standing for long periods to arthritis and mobility issues, each story shows how grooming can be adapted to prioritise comfort, dignity, and wellbeing.

Based in North Yorkshire, we work one-to-one to support dogs at every stage of life, especially those who need a slower, more thoughtful approach.

Trust-Based Grooming Case Study: Jigme, a Bichon Frise x Poodle, with a fear of grooming

This video shows an early session with Jigme where he is being gently introduced to the sound of the clippers. At this stage he was clearly uncomfortable and showing signs of fear, including baring his teeth and vocalising in response to the noise.

This video shows Jigme after 12 trust-based grooming sessions.  Happier and more trusting.

Some dogs find grooming difficult, not because they are “bad” or “naughty”, but because the experience feels overwhelming to them.

For dogs like Jigme, grooming had never been a positive experience early in life. Without gentle introduction to handling, brushing, tools, and noise, many dogs learn to associate grooming with fear or discomfort. Over time this can lead to defensive behaviours such as snapping, showing teeth, or trying to escape.

When this happens, forcing the process or rushing through a groom can make the experience even more stressful for both the dog and the owner.

About Jigme

Jigme is a Bichon Frise/Poodle mix and he is 7 years old.

He was tied to a tree in the front yard of a home in rural New Brunswick, Canada when he was approximately 10 months old. His owner left him with her ex-partner when they split up. A friend of mine rescued him. He initially went to a family with two children aged 10 and 8. We were told one of the children was allergic, so he was returned, but I later found out it was because he wasn’t house trained.

When Jigme arrived with us, we were told he was house trained he wasn’t. We were told he was vaccinated he wasn’t. He had never seen a groomer and had never had any form of training. He was also extremely mouthy.

When he first arrived he was a shaggy, matted mess.

Before Coming to Vanity Fur VIP

We booked him with a local groomer who clipped him right back. She never styled him it was a traditional groomer.

After a few months a new groomer moved to town and we switched to her. She was better at cutting him but again it was non-consent grooming. Jigme never enjoyed it and he went there for at least 3 years.

The real issues began once we moved to the UK. Our first grooming experience was in Pocklington he went twice and she then refused to groom him due to him trying to bite her. We then travelled to a groomer in Eastfield (who later closed). He went there for around a year. He still wasn’t happy but I could see she was making progress.

For almost a year we then attended another consent-based groomer, but there was literally zero grooming happening. Jigme was only bathed and fed treats. He became extremely matted and I believe his behaviour towards brushing and grooming intensified during this period.

At home, Jigme was just as difficult. Any attempt to groom him resulted in him threatening to bite us. Bath times were awful. I gave up and left it to my husband because I felt if Jigme bit me, I would no longer want him.

I became depressed and emotional because I felt we had failed him. We simply didn’t have the experience to adopt a dog like Jigme.

Choosing a Different Approach

In desperation I sought out Melanie. I was looking for a groomer who would take their time and build trust with Jigme.

My initial contact with Melanie gave me hope and I liked her approach.

The First Sessions

Jigme’s initial session with Melanie was scary. I was worried he would bite her. He barely allowed her to touch him. Melanie even used a paintbrush to gently introduce touch.

I understood the first sessions would be entirely about Jigme building trust and getting used to handling. Having lots of regular short sessions helped.

It was also helpful that I was allowed to be present during grooming sessions.

The Process & Owner Commitment

Melanie gave me homework and advice which we practiced at home.

Progress Over Time

I can see the progress Melanie has made with Jigme. He is still far from perfect and still doesn’t tolerate clippers, but Melanie can now scissor cut him. Some areas remain sensitive, particularly his paws and underside, but I am confident he will improve with time.

Changes at Home

The grooming process at home has vastly improved.

Bath time used to be awful. Now we can bathe him using the products Melanie recommended and he doesn’t even need his lick mat anymore now he receives it as a reward for good behaviour. He no longer tries to bite during baths.

With brushing, Jigme now willingly comes to us. Every morning he presents himself for brushing and appears to enjoy it. Sometimes he is reluctant for us to stop. We no longer have to bribe him with treats he now receives a couple as a reward.

The Impact on the Owners

My anxiety has greatly decreased and I now take a more active role in grooming him because I am no longer afraid of being bitten.

Even my husband, who was always more confident, has learned to listen to Jigme and no longer forces him to be groomed.

Looking Ahead

I feel confident that working with Melanie will lead to a more pleasant and tolerable grooming experience for both Jigme and ourselves.

Will he ever love grooming? Probably not. But I believe we will reach a point where he can have a successful and more relaxed experience.

We will likely always supplement grooming with occasional sedated veterinary sessions so his health can be properly monitored.

Final Reflections & Recommendation

I would highly recommend Melanie to any owners with dogs who struggle with traditional grooming. I can see first-hand how her approach is kinder and reduces stress for both dog and owner.

Melanie’s approach is the perfect balance. She is very attuned to your dog and tailors each session to their needs, with emphasis on building trust and comfort.

Overall, this process is helping make Jigme a better version of himself.

Who This Case Study Is For

This case study may resonate with you if you have questions similar to the following:

How can I help my dog who finds grooming stressful or difficult?

My dog has never been to a groomers before?

How can Vanity Fur VIP help with my dog that doesn't like being brushed?

I'm looking for a dog groomer to help my fearful dog?

Some dogs haven’t had positive early experiences with grooming. Others may have missed those early introductions altogether, or have had experiences that made them wary of handling, brushing, or grooming tools. For these dogs, grooming can feel overwhelming and they may react by avoiding the process, resisting handling, or even showing defensive behaviours such as snapping or baring their teeth.

Living with a dog who struggles with grooming can be incredibly stressful for owners as well. Simple things like brushing, bathing, or visiting a groomer can become a source of worry and frustration, even when you are doing your best to help your dog.

Jigme’s journey reflects the reality many owners face when their dog finds grooming difficult. Progress doesn’t happen overnight, but with patience, understanding, and a calm, trust-based approach, many dogs can learn to feel more comfortable with grooming over time.
